Treating Stress and Trauma in a Rapidly Changing Political Landscape

Since the election of President Trump on January 20, 2025, I have seen a marked increase in anxiety among new and existing clients.  During several recent Intake/Diagnostic Assessments, an unusually high number of clients have reported having a high level of anxiety about political events. They have concerns about their finances resulting from job cuts in the federal workforce and fear about possible cuts in Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

In my 12 years of clinical work, I have never encountered a situation where a rapidly changing political environment is the primary reason for clients to seek therapy.  I have encouraged clients to speak candidly about their fears. Therapy sessions are not open to political debates or opinions. I ensure that the focus is on treating the impact political events are having on clients’ mental health.

I use Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy and Client Centered Therapy as the primary interventions. I do not allow sessions to digress into political discussions. My focus is on treating clients for their reactions to political events.

If you are feeling overwhelmed by fast moving events which have a direct impact on your life, please contact me for therapy. I feel confident that I can help.
